How to setup a static pool of IP addresses for VPN clients

Error 733: the PPP control protocol for this network protocol is not available on the server.

In a case your VPN clients may experience problems attempting to connect to your computer running Windows RRAS. The RAS clients may receive one or more of the following error messages when they fail to connect:

Dial-Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network protocols you specified in the Server Type settings. Check your network configuration in the Control Panel then try the connection again.

TCP/IP CP reported error 733: the PPP control protocol for this network protocol is not available on the server.  

To fix this issue, you may setup a static pool of IP addresses for VPN clients

  1. Run RRAS from Administrative Tools.
  2. Click Network in the Remote Access Setup dialog box and click Configure for the TCP/IP Protocol in the Server Settings section in the Network Configuration dialog box.
  3. Click the Use Static Address Pool radio button and type a beginning and ending range of IP addresses to use for your RAS clients.
  4. Click OK twice, click Continue, click Close, and then restart your computer when prompted.
